Tms Therapy: Conditions , Treatment And Protocol
What is Depression?
Depression is like a heavy cloud that hangs over you, making it hard to enjoy life. It can leave you feeling sad, tired, and unmotivated. Sometimes, it can even change how you think about yourself and the world around you.
What is Anxiety?
Anxiety, on the other hand, is like a constant feeling of worry or fear, as if you’re always on alert for something bad to happen. This can lead to physical symptoms like a racing heart or difficulty concentrating.
How Does TMS Treat Depression and Anxiety?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive therapy that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. It focuses on areas that control mood and anxiety. Think of it as a sort of “reboot” for your brain, helping to restore balance to the way you feel.
Understanding OCD and How TMS Treats It
What is OCD?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is like a hamster wheel that you can’t get off. People with OCD have repeated, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and feel compelled to perform certain actions (compulsions) to reduce their anxiety.
How Does TMS Treat OCD?
Similar to its effects on depression and anxiety, TMS helps address OCD by stimulating specific areas of the brain involved in these obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. It aims to disrupt the unhealthy cycles of thinking.
Protocol for TMS Treatment
1.Initial Evaluation-A healthcare provider assesses your symptoms and health history.
2. TMS Sessions– Typically involves daily sessions for about 4-6 weeks depending on the amount done per day.
According to research, the minimum number of sessions required to see noticeable effects is 30. Each session lasts around 6- 20 minutes (dependant on specific protocol) with a 45-50 minute break in-between sessions.
3. Stimulation -While sitting in a comfortable chair, a magnetic coil is placed on your head, delivering painless pulses at frequencies that are relevant to the condition we are treating.
Stimulating the Motor Cortex- to determine the minimum level of intensity of the pulses needed for the treatment, motor threshold is performed, in which a certain area of the head is stimulated , which is directly responsible for evoking hand movement, the lowest intensity required to evoke a hand twitch is what is used for the treatment.
The same magnetic coil is used to deliver targeted pulses ,this is done using the selected protocol for the specific condition.
4.Monitoring– Your progress is monitored throughout the treatment, and adjustments are made as necessary.
5. Follow-Up- Continuous monitoring ensures the treatment is effective, making adjustments to enhance results.
TMS is a promising therapy for depression, anxiety, OCD as well as other mental health disorders that offers hope for many individuals seeking relief from their symptoms.
